Pavilion Shopping Mall

Pavilion Kuala Lumpur is KL’s haute couture shopping Mecca. It takes a lot to stand out in the city’s mallscape but this shopping centre, which occupies prime real estate along Jalan Bukit Bintang, does just that. Opened in 2007 it has three major sections – a retail mall, an office block and two residential towers. Keeping the city’s fashionistas looking polished, this KL staple is the perfect example of how extravagant some malls can be. It features almost the same staggering square footage as Mid Valley Megamall and 1 Utama and the 1.37 million-sqft white marble complex is a combination of indoor and outdoor shopping venues.

It resembles an oversized Grecian temple with post modern pillars, but instead of torches and an altar with a statue of Zeus, it houses over 450 snazzy stores. With hip dining options, big-box retailers and access to both international designer labels and local specialty retailers, Pavilion KL is a favourite among KL-ites. Popular no matter the day of the week or time of day, the seven-storey lifestyle centre has six shopping ‘zones’ and a row of street boutiques.

At the main entrance of Pavilion KL is the tallest Liuli Crystal fountain in Malaysia, the Pavilion Crystal Fountain. Billed as a national landmark, just like Rome’s Trevi Fountain you can toss in your loose change to make a wish: coins are later donated to charity. Opposite Bintang Circle (an open atrium in Pavilion KL used as a promotional space for events) is Singaporean department store Parkson Grand which spans three stories. Other expected, fully stocked anchor shops include Mercato Supermarket and Harvey Norman.
At Pavilion KL Malaysian fashion brands like Jimmy Choo can be found alongside big-ticket European luxury retailers such as Coach, Diane Von Furstenberg, Dolce & Gabbana, Juicy Couture, MaxMara, Versace and Yves Saint Laurent. High-end browsing takes place at Couture Pavilion where upmarket, international fashion outposts (a majority of them occupying double-storey street front lots) like Michael Kors and Marc by Marc Jacobs are at. Meanwhile inside Pavilion KL are lower-priced, mid-market international and local brands such as Forever 21, Pull & Bear, MNG Mango and Salabianca.

A feature that makes Pavilion KL popular is its all-encompassing holiday décor. For example its 2011 Christmas décor included a Christmas carnival set up in its atrium, complete with Santa’s workshop, 10-foot high pine trees, giant sleighs and other baubles and gifts.

Couture Pavilion

Couture Pavilion is the place to find the latest collections from international and local high fashion designers.

Fashion Avenue

Those looking for brands that do not carry such hefty price tags can head to Fashion Avenue where brands like Laura Mercier and Victoria’s Secret can be found.

Tokyo Street

If you are more interested in unique Asian fashion styles, then pay a visit to the new Tokyo Street in Pavilion KL: the brands found here are also reasonably-priced and one-of-a-kind.

Food

There is a food court (Gourmet Emporium) on the lower ground floor where you can get reasonably priced Korean, Japanese and local fare. Strategically placed around the food court are upmarket restaurants like Manhattan Fish Market, Dragon-I, Tony Roma’s and Madam Kwan’s. Cosmopolites usually dine at Connection, an outdoor strip with restaurants such as Tom, Dick & Harry’s Live and The Pressroom Bistro. These places provide entertainment (think live local bands and televised soccer matches on projector screens) and alcohol to go with their meals.

Entertainment

You will not find extreme entertainment options here like Berjaya Times Square’s indoor theme park: no, this is the place where you come to spend cash. Entertainment-wise there is a Red Box karaoke bar where you can belt tunes out at, or if you prefer the lure of the big screen, head on over to the 13-screen Golden Screen Cinemas (GSC). Other than that, the mall’s top floors are home to spa outfits and beauty retailers like ADONIS Wellness @ Seventh Heaven and Aster Spring Origin of Beauty.

KL’s hot and humid weather make indoor shopping centres wildly popular with the locals, so expect crowds at Pavilion KL especially during the weekend. Pavilion KL can be reached using several public transportation lines: the Bukit Bintang and Raja Chulan monorail stations are just a few minutes walk away. Whether you are hunting for the latest limited-edition Coach clutch, fresh sushi or if you are simply eager to put your feet and sip on a pint while enjoying the game on the telly, Pavilion KL is the place to be.
